Top 12 Kitchen Tips and Tricks You Must Know

Welcome back to “Arpit’s Flavors”. Making three to five meals every day can be cumbersome, especially when you’re a novice cook. It gets even more complicated if you’re working as well. I personally learned Kitchen Tips and Tricks in my late 30s, had my learning cycle, and now feel quite comfortable with it. However, if you stick to the basics with a little persistence and discipline, cooking can be done with ease. In today’s blog, I will share a few quick cooking tips and tricks to make your kitchen and cooking routine faster so that you can enjoy your time in the kitchen.

Keep Your Workspace Clean and Organized

For convenience and efficiency, always keep your workspace clean and organized. Keep your chopping board and knife somewhere near the stove and sink for easy access and smooth workflow. Frequently needed items should be near your workspace to make your routine faster and save time.

Invest in Good Kitchen Tools

Inappropriate tools can waste plenty of your precious time. Thus, invest in some good kitchen tools like a chopper, grater, shears, and mincer. These tools can really make it easier to cut food quickly and save tons of time. Such culinary tips can significantly enhance your efficiency.

Use a Single Pan for Multiple Tasks

For small setups and homes, whenever possible, try using a single pan for multiple things. For instance, if making shahi paneer, roast onions on one side and paneer on the other. Then, after taking out the paneer, add tomatoes, grind everything, and then use the same pan to prepare the gravy. This way, you don’t have to use multiple pans, saving time in cleaning up. Indeed, this is one of the helpful cooking tips that can simplify your routine.

Use High-Quality Cookware

Investing in good quality, premium range cookware is essential. For example, high-quality stainless steel tri-ply cookware can make your cooking and cleaning routine smoother and faster. It ensures even heat distribution and prevents burning, thereby allowing you to cook delicious recipes with very little oil. This cooking hint is something only chefs know but can be beneficial for everyone.

Keep Homemade Purees and Pastes

Using homemade tomato puree and onion garlic paste can speed up your work. You can freeze them using ice cube trays, then transfer them to freezer bags and use them whenever required. While fresh cut veggies are always better, frozen cubes are real time-savers when you are busy. These cooking tricks only chefs know can be your secret weapon.

Use an Electric Kettle for Boiling Water

Keep an electric kettle to boil water while preparing meals. Adding boiling water into recipes can make your cooking faster since you don’t have to wait long for food to come to the boiling point. For example, when making upma or preparing tadka for dal, add hot water.

Clean While You Cook

Cleaning everything at the end of cooking can feel like it takes forever. To make cleaning faster, clean while you’re cooking. This way, by the time your meal preparation is over, so is your work in the kitchen. Now you can relax and enjoy your meal without worrying about cleaning. This kitchen tip can drastically reduce your after-cooking workload.

Use a Small Bin for Vegetable Peels

To keep your countertop clean and make cleaning easy and fast, use a small bin, bowl, or container as a trash bin. Throw all the vegetable peels directly into the container while peeling or chopping the veggies. This way, your countertop will always stay clean, and it will drastically save you a lot of time.

Use a Spice Box for Daily Spices

In Indian kitchens, we often use a spice box to store multiple daily spices and herbs together, which is very convenient. Accessing most of the spices from a single container makes cooking fast. You can also pre-mix spices you use daily and store them in a separate container to make your cooking routine faster. Such kitchen tips can simplify your spice management.

Keep Extra Ingredients in the Fridge

Keeping a few extra things in the fridge can be a lifesaver, especially when you’re running late. Items like extra rice, paneer, cut veggies, and dosa batter can help you quickly prepare meals. For example, with leftover rice, cut veggies, and eggs, you can make egg fried rice in just 5 minutes.

Organize Your Fridge

A well-organized fridge can make your cooking routine smoother and faster. Keep things you need daily in an easy-to-access place. For instance, keep cut veggies, herbs, garlic, ginger, and lemon together on one shelf. Similarly, keep cooked meals, atta for chapati, curd, and dosa batter together on another shelf.

Use a Larger Pan for Crispy Vegetables

If you prefer your dry vegetable sabzi like Potato, Cauliflower, ladyfinger, or Potato Cumins to be crispy and caramelized, use a larger size pan with a big surface area. This way, the food will get more direct heat and cook faster. If cooking in larger quantities, put the lid on to trap and retain heat for efficient cooking.
